"Yesterday I was, Tomorrow I will be."

Solo Exhibition at River City Gallery, 6 Oct 2022 - 20 Nov 2022.

A line is only a few things in this particular world that we can see with our eyes and touch by our feelings. In the visual world, a single 'line' endlessly becomes a form, a pattern, and an outline as long as the creator's imagination takes you.

In the sensory world, we all have a 'timeline' that can't be seen with our eyes but is parallel to every change and growth in our life. Although it is visually invisible, it is a firm line dwelling on our feelings. Especially when we stop and look back.

On the artistic path of Pomme Chan, both the line and timeline exist in parallel and connect seamlessly. When we glance at the line on Pomme Chan's artistic creation, we are looking at the line and timeline of her life. The more the timeline goes forward into the future, the more the line extracted from her experience and emotion is flourishing.

The standard definition of 'Good Things Takes Time' refers to a lifelong dedication to achieve something beyond the ordinary. To Pomme Chan, it is good things that happen during the course of her life. Probably exploring new possibilities in every step of her path could be the definition of an artist like Pomme Chan.

'Yesterday I was, Tomorrow I will be.' is the exhibition telling the story of a 20-year path of Pomme Chan that lies in each line and design by her creation. From day one, the young Pomme Chan started to draw a simple line to share her happiness and feelings, the simplest form of emotion, till today that her line creates happiness for people. Various genres of art are created through her feelings at the very moment; paintings, sculptures, furniture, the list are endless.

Dreamer Room

During her first two years in London, Pomme Chan indulged her passion for illustration and gained crazy nightlife experiences while interning with more than four companies and at the same time working as a part-time waitress.  Yet not one single day went by without practicing her drawing and building up her profile.  The movement in her strokes gradually became more distinctive and dynamic.  Finally, Pomme Chan found a place for herself as an art director at one of the British magazines.

“I was working there for nearly Six Months, producing layouts and drawing illustrations.  I was content with my life.  It felt steady and secure.  Then one day, everyone was told to go home because the company went bankrupt.  It was like being struck by lightning, so unexpected.  It was devastating.  I just sat there feeling blank until one of my friends told me to get my act together.”

So the former art director got her act together and took any job that was available.  She had to deal with rejections as a flyer distributor and took a job as a beauty advisor which definitely didn’t suit her personality.

“Every night after work, I would come home to practice my drawing, losing myself in my own imagination.  It was a kind of healing process and to remind myself of my dream.”

Pomme Chan never gave up.  She consoled herself with the thought that "Good things take time". She decided to get a loan from the bank by showing them emails from the Telegraph and Mercedes Benz which had commissioned her to create some design work.  Fortunately, she was convincing, and she was granted the loan.  She received £7,000 with which she purchased a website domain and produced a portfolio to pursue her dream of becoming a renowned illustrator.  She sent her portfolio to many advertising agencies but sadly, gained no response.

Later, the hard-working artist decided to change her approach.  Instead of asking “Do you like my work?”, she would ask them “How should I improve it?” or “What part of my work don’t you like?”.  She was showing them that she was willing to change and alter my work for them.

After changing the approach, her career path started to grow.

Entrepreneur Room

Pomme Chan spent more than ten years developing originality in her work in the UK.  She had agencies in many countries including Japan, Germany, Russia, and the US.  Then she decided to return home and launched the first home decor business with her friends called “What if”, a cafe and art showroom.  In 2014, she opened her first studio called ‘Happy Pomme’ which was later changed to ‘Happy People Studio’.

A Room

This is a room where Pomme Chan let her inner child play the trick. A room filled with everything she wants to do, the experiment, the fun and the mistakes that happen during production. “When art can be in any form, why restrict me to doing only on canvas when I can do so much more?”  All the art pieces here are an extended part of Pomme Chan’s imagination, including using new material from Upcycling frames, sustainable wood, and surplus carpet. This room not only represents the freedom of her inner child but also showcases her “Tomorrow I will be” too.

Happy People Studio Room

Now, Pomme Chan is the design director and founder of the “Happy People Studio”, a place where she wishes to learn and share digital techniques, creative ideas, and new cultures, including political opinions with her team which includes millennials and Gen-Z artists.

Because she strongly believes in this new generation’s potential to create endless possibilities in the digital age, Pomme Chan is very open-minded when collaborating with younger people on many art projects and exhibitions.

“It’s the process of constant learning, unlearning, and relearning.  We might have to discard some beliefs or look at things from a different point of view because today there is a transition between the old and new generations.  I have to seek ways and discover how to live happily with the younger generations because I don’t want to turn bitter when aging.”

Tacha

Many people have compared me to a tiger. From the outside, I appear to be a strong leader, serious, fearful, and uncompromising like a tiger. But, as I reflected on myself, I didn't want to appear as a terrifying or powerful tiger, but rather as a kind-hearted tiger who coexists with others in such a way that those around them are comfortable and smiling. This sculpture is a representation of my genuine self. It was a tiger leaping from fear. In the past, I used to be terrified of change, of leadership, and of losing control. Now, I've gradually stepped outside of my comfort zone to become a brilliant tiger ready to go to work with joy and vigor, jump through the hoops to welcome the year of the rabbit by converting myself into a better person every day.

Keep Moving Forward

If you don't give up and keep moving towards your goals, the resistance will eventually give way to your persistence. That’s become a way of life to me.

I’ll See you, Mara

During the uncertain time in 2021, I was in the middle of chaos from many things I could not control. I was having difficulty staying sane and sharp. A friend of mine encouraged me to try meditation, and it’s become the best thing I did for myself. I began to include 10 minutes of meditation in my routine every morning. Since then, for six months (108,800 seconds), I have begun to realize something inside me has shifted; I start to feel each energy that runs through me during each moment in the day. I become calmer and more serene.

FUCK

This is one of the favorite pieces of my all-time work. It is simple, straightforward, and very graphic compared to others. To me, this piece is raw, honest and fun at the same time. I am using black, pink and orange on paper. I love the simplicity of the material and the organic shape of the piece.

Abstract

I aim to make this as the final piece before completing the others. I'm curious how I'd feel if I were ready to run and get close to my destination. Blue symbolizes relaxation and comfort. White represents a sense of freedom that can be expressed in a variety of ways. I also experimented with spray paint for the first time since I'm looking for a new sensation.

Little girl with a big dream

In 2004, While I was still studying my last year of FdA [Foundation Degree award classification] course, I realized I wanted to be an illustrator and make my name here in London, a little girl with a big dream. At the time, I didn’t know that only 30% of women could make it into the art world. I am only curious why there aren't more female illustrators. I want to be a woman who is independent, kind, and strong and be in the art industry one day.

Little girl with a big dream (Carpet)

Another fascinating piece with a range of colors and carving patterns is this carpet. I chose New Zealand Wool and Surplus Polish Cotton as materials to achieve the style's curvature. Sharp lines are created with scissors and combined with different levels of weaving to add texture and intricacy to the carpet.

A Chair

When I was a kid, I was an introvert who preferred to play alone. I enjoy sitting alone in a confined place; it makes me feel comfortable, secure, and in command. I've never figured out why. This small cupcake recliner I made was a grown-up version of my childhood fantasy space.

Be Kind Mirror

No one can be harsh to you more than yourself; I know this from my heart as I’m the one who constantly blames myself first when anything goes wrong, whether I did too much or maybe I did too little. Nothing is ever enough.

I look at myself in the mirror, put a warm hand to my heart, and say I am stronger than I thought. I can go through anything. And I thank myself for all the ventures I’ve been through; I thank my body, heart, and soul for giving me strength and love. I hug myself. Then I smiled.

I wish you are looking into this mirror and being kind to yourself, too; we are only human.

Fleur Series

Walking around a city is one of my favorite things to do when traveling. When I go for a walk, I frequently come across flowers. I have no idea what it's called. I just smile as I walk by. The flowers don't have to worry about surviving in different weather conditions. Furthermore, each species is distinct. I believe the beauty of flowers is akin to many people's lives that have been through a lot yet are still wonderful in their own ways.

Magic Moment

Since September 2021, I have been dealing with so many unfortunate events and circumstances; I lost faith in people and was lost within myself. There was nothing I could do at the time, so I turned myself into meditation, and that's probably the best thing in my life.

Meditation has become one of the safest places; those are untouchable moments for me. When I take a journey inside myself, I recognize the good, the bad, and the ugly part of me. It took me a while to allow and accept myself. Then I investigate it deeper and deeper to find a balance and try to nurture myself. This is still the part I’m not good at, but I’m trying to let go. The journey within self has become a significant subject of my recent art.

A Dream within a dream (Carpet)

This is a graphic design that has been transformed into a carpet. I weave with New Zealand Wool to achieve lovely, crisp patterns. The material is long-lasting because it is made of surplus silk and a cotton fiber called Polished Cotton, which has been treated to make it soft and retain its form better than regular cotton fibers. This helped to make my graphic work more tangible.

Palette of Pomme (Carpet)

“When life has so many colors, this is my palette”  The Palette of Pomme carpet is another difficult piece to create by weaving different shades of colors while keeping the color combination in the palette together. This material has New Zealand wool blended with silk, as well as various varieties of shine, such as Bamboo, Nylon Silk, and Wool Silk. Pom's palette has lovely tones.

Black Swirl (Carpet)

Looking at my work in these 20 years, the Swirl is the earliest abstract shape that plays a big part in my career. Some say it was my style. Some ask if there was any meaning. To me, it was just a flow. Drawing the swirly line makes me feel free as there wasn’t any draft or sketch; I usually go for it with a black pen.

This carpet design is made from my original hand-drawn swirl without changing one bit. I like the rawness and more extensive scale once applied to the carpet, which makes it look different from looking at them on paper.

New Chapter

I remembered how bad I was as a leader when I started Happy People Studio 8 years ago. I didn't know how to work with other people and didn't realize how I built my company without a strong foundation. During the past eight years, I’ve learned much about working with people and helping them grow and become better leaders. This piece shows that building a solid foundation for the company is one of the essential things in my life. It’s something I need to do and a challenge, too, as nothing is ever more complex but rather important than changing myself and my attitude. Today I’m delighted as the team I have built now is the strongest one I have, and I genuinely appreciate everything they do.

Sirimongkol no.02

This Ganesha is made of only three colors: silver, gold, and naga, to benefit those who adore and own it. We will provide an advisor to help you with the positions and elements that will boost your luck.

This is a continuation of the series begun with Sirimongkol no.1, on which I and Ou Pruitsatorn Sakulthai worked together to create the Phra Phum shrine using the same multilayering techniques shown in this piece. The Ganesha elements are an overlapping of several important portions from head to toe, consisting of 24 layer 36 pieces that compose the Ganesha in the form of adornments, without typical clothing and without a face, leaving the Ganesha open to everyone's imagination.

A dream with a Dream Series

….. All that we see or seem

It is but a dream within a dream.

from a dream within a dream poem by EDGAR ALLAN POE

This poetry was full of melancholy and perplexity. However, I took this sentence and interpreted it in my own way. I always perceive events as overlapping dreams and I let my imaginations run wild every night. It's like a dream that overlaps with another dream. This artwork is like turning that moment into a painting.

Always & Forever

Infinity is a shape that appears frequently in my art. Perhaps it is because of the curve of the lines that I enjoy and excel at. With the size of the work and the way it was produced, I hope to harken back to the early days of drawing. I want to know if we are still the same person.

"No," is the answer. No matter how hard I try, the line of work in this piece cannot be the same as it was in 2002. I am the same as everyone else. We all change throughout time. Live with what we've chosen for the time being and do as much as we can.

Here I am now. (Self Portrait)

In the early stages of my work as an artist, I created portraits but I haven't done a portrait since 2006. Today I'm revisiting myself, and I'd like to create a portrait of myself for this year depending on how I'm feeling right now.

I prefer drawing using pencil lines. Pencil and I are almost best friends. When I finished this painting, in which I returned to create a picture that didn't need to be sketched, I was overjoyed. Right now, I'm utilizing a light color that's as raw as our ego.

MEMORIES

Crystals are like flashbacks to various points throughout my life. When I think of his own art, the image that comes to mind is black and white. People around me, on the other hand, frequently comment on how vivid and beautiful my art is, and they are surprised when I try to make it less detailed. While I recognize that my work is improving and it is more difficult than the initial job, which is detailed.

What we see and what others see are not always the same. Listen to your inner voice over your outside voice, and accept yourself at all times, especially how you feel right now.

A Door within A Door series

Inspired by the following poetry, a door is also a metaphor for a new beginning, a new chapter in which I'm relating to those years this year.

The Door (1962), Miroslav Holub

Go and open the door.
Maybe outside, there’s
a tree, or a wood,
a garden,
or a magic city.

Go and open the door.
Maybe a dog’s rummaging.
Maybe you’ll see a face,
or an eye,
or the picture
of a picture.

Go and open the door.
If there’s a fog
it will clear.
Go and open the door.

Even if there’s only
the darkness ticking,
even if there’s only
the hollow wind,
even if
nothing
is there,
go and open the door.

At least
there’ll be
a drought.

You can’t be brave without fear.
